The 2014 Nissan Versa may be one of the least expensive used cars you can buy, but that’s not enough to make this subcompact car a good bet. Available in sedan and hatchback styles, the Versa has a noisy and weak engine, poor crash safety and reliability ratings, and a low-quality interior – even by economy car standards.
The Nissan Versa has a four-cylinder engine with 109 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard; a four-speed automatic and continuously variable automatic transmission are available. The Versa has just enough pep for city driving, but it feels lethargic on hills and when passing on the highway. The engine also buzzes loudly at high speeds and when accelerating, which can become annoying. The trade-off is high fuel economy; CVT-equipped models can hit 31 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, and the four- and five-speed transmissions enable around 26/35 mpg city/highway.
